Starter Program Spotlight: How One Mom Launched a Field Hockey Program in Her Hometown

Beth Laverick is a participant in Blockstar's Starter Program. Here is her journey.

“I have many fond memories of playing field hockey in high school. My two girls, ages 6 and 13, have also fallen in love with the sport and play for H2O. My daughters’ closest friends are their field hockey teammates, and field hockey is now a big part of their lives.”

In 2023, this Maryland mom saw a need — and turned it into an opportunity to grow the game she and her daughters love. Her hometown of Havre de Grace hadn’t had a recreational field hockey program in over a decade, and the closest option was 40 minutes away. So she took action.

“I presented to our recreation committee the need for field hockey and was given the green light to launch Havre de Grace Field Hockey in 2023.”

With no playbook on how to build a rec program from scratch, she did what many grassroots organizers do — she figured it out one step at a time. Balls, cones, pinnies… and then came the need for goals.

That’s where Blockstar Field Hockey stepped in.

“I reached out to Blockstar, and I’m so glad I did. Jill, the owner, shared that there was a starter package for new rec programs. The discount allowed me to buy two goals for our program, and Jill shipped them out the same day to ensure we’d have them for our first clinic.”

As the program grew, so did their need for equipment. By November, they hosted a tournament and purchased two more Blockstar goals.

“Growing the sport of field hockey is no easy task, but the field hockey community is so incredibly supportive and the level of support I have received along the way is immeasurable. My advice for others looking to launch a rec program is to not overthink it, just jump in.  It has been so rewarding."

Despite being a mom of four and running a business, she still shows up every Sunday to cheer on kids as they develop new skills, score goals, and build friendships.
